    The Key Laboratory of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Ministry of Education (Shandong University) was founded based on the Institute of Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Shandong University. The Key Laboratory was approved in December 1993 by the former State Education Commission, formally opened after acceptance in 1996. Over years, the Key Laboratory has been adhering to traditions of colloid and interface chemistry, emphasizing on the frontier researches of colloid and interface chemistry as well as the significant demands of China (both industrial and regional), continuously expanding the research directions and areas. The Key Laboratory brings basic researches and application closely together, gradually forming characteristics research superiority. The overall research capability is at the forefront position in the same disciplinary in China. The Key Laboratory has an important base not only for the research of colloid and interface chemistry but also for the personnel training. The current director of the Key Laboratory is Professor HAO Jingcheng. The director of the Academic Committee is Professor ZHANG Xi, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
    The Key Laboratory has a faculty of 43 persons, including 30 PhD supervisors, 33 full professors and 7 associate professors. Among them, 15 persons are either entitled with Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, or Yangtze River Scholar Professor, or Taishan Scholars; or the winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China; or Supported by the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University from the Ministry of Education.
